Fall protection protects personnel from falling. In the event they do fall it stops them without causing major injury. Fall protection is used when working at height, near an edge, or on a steep surface. The hierarchy of fall protection should govern what type of fall protection system is required. Fall protection hierarchy Avoid work at height if at all possible. Or locate plant and equipment in locations where there is no risk of a fall. When working at height is unavoidable, ensure that workers are not exposed to unnecessary risks. Providing a parapet or guardrail could eliminate the fall hazard. Where it is not possible to eliminate the risk of falling, a suitable system will minimise the consequences of a fall. This could be a fall arrest system (protects workers if they should fall) or fall restraint system (prevents workers from reaching a hazard).
